Key Rule
By purpose we mean the objective that we want to achieve. For example, "I am saving money so as to buy a car". The objective is buying a car, and there are different ways to express that purpose:
- so as (not) to + Verb / in order (not) to + Verb
- to + Verb
- for + Verb + ing (or noun)
- so that + Subject + can + Verb (if the main verb is in Simple Present)
- so that + Subject + could + Verb (if the main verb is in Simple Past)
Example: I am saving money. I want to buy a car.
- I am saving money to buy a car.
- I am saving money so as to buy a car.
- I am saving money in order to buy a car.
- I am saving money for buying a car.
- I am saving money so that I can buy a car.
